Day 217 - 1/19/11

If someone asked you to describe the sound of silence, how would you? Would you say it was the sound of stillness? Calmness? Quiet? That's an awkward question to try to answer mainly because its "oxymoronic" in its wording. Even in trying to find an answer to that question, I have created a new word. A word odd in construction and meaning. The reason I ask this is because today sorta placed me in a position to think about it. As I find myself in prayer, I find myself immediately listening to the silence. And I believe that sometimes the sound of silence speaks louder than sound itself. In reality, our world technically can't be completely silent. The air whistles by. Cars whizz by. Birds chirp. Even things such as our hearts make a sound involuntarily. But really finding silence is special. The point I'm trying to make is: through silence, we are able to listen to ourselves. We are able to analyze where we are such as that of a bat using sonar in a dark cave. Silence enables our focus to really take control of our senses. So I really encourage all of us to take a moment in our day to listen to the silence. I understand it can be difficult. Being me, music is my second passion, so it is extremely tough to unplug and bask in the beauty of nothingness. I just really feel it is something everyone could use a little more of these days.
